Harvey Cohen z»l

The World Union for Progressive Judaism (WUPJ) is deeply saddened by the death of Harvey Cohen, z”l , husband of WUPJ’s former chair, Ruth Cohen, who leaves behind a legacy of incomparable commitment to the Reform Movement in Israel and around the world.

Harvey was a true and dear friend and a generous partner whose sage counsel and philanthropic support were essential to the financial success of WUPJ over many decades. He was a wise, kind and thoughtful man who will be sorely missed by his friends, family and the World Union international community.

As Rabbi Richard and Bella Hirsch reflected, «May we all take comfort in the knowledge that Harvey’s life of ‘maasim tovim’ will continue to impact on the character and values of all who knew and loved him. Yehi Zichro Baruch — May Harvey’s memory be an enduring blessing.»

We offer our deep condolences to Ruth, and to Jonathan, David and the entire Cohen family.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday in Israel. Letters of condolence can be sent to the family home at 97 Eliezer Kaplan Street, Herzliya Pituach.

(Sanhedrin Tractate 111; 1)

Dear friends,

The Israel Movement for Reform and Progressive Judaism expresses our sincere condolences to the Cohen family. We share with you the sad news that Harvey Cohen, z»l, passed away on January 29, 2019 (23 Shvat 5779). The funeral took place earlier today in Israel. The world is better for having had him in it, and we are better for having known him. Harvey is survived by his wife Ruth, his 2 children Jonathan and David, and his family in Israel and around the world.

Harvey was a true friend and a generous partner of the Israel Reform Movement, a partner in establishing and maintaining the IMPJ’s pre-military Mechina program in Jaffa and Holon. Harvey also served as Vice President of The Movement for Reform Judaism in the United Kingdom.

In the Shkalim Tractate of the Jerusalem Talmud we are told: “We need not erect tombstones for the righteous, for their deeds serve as their memory alone.” In this time of great grief and sorrow, may the memories of Harvey serve as a source of comfort for you and the entire family.

We offer our deep condolences to Ruth, and to Jonathan, David and the entire Cohen family.

Letters of condolence can be sent to the family home at 97 Eliezer Kaplan Street, Herzliya Pituach.

Sincerely,
